Prop 200 is a Mess
In our infinite wisdom, the voters of Arizona approved 2004’s prop 200, which among other things requires up to date ID to vote.
Nevermind that as a 27 year old man, the photo on my drivers licence has been the same for the past 5 years and will remain so until my 65th birthday. Nevermind that many women change their names when they get married and are slow to get it changed on their registration and/or id. Nevermind that not everyone has a driver’s license or photo id. Nevermind that prop 200 unfairly restricts those that live on reservations … yeah nevermind all that. (there is way more craziness with prop 200 that I’m hoping my highly smartified readers post in the comments). Even if you agree with prop 200 100% ... you have to admit that confusion is absolutely rampant.
For example, did you know that the ID requirements are not in place for for voting by mail? Nope not at all. But—did you know that early voting at an early voting polling site ALSO doesn’t require ID?
Well now we are at the point of this blog … neither did I … and I pay attention to this stuff.
I just got this in the mail:
Okay, I know you can read it—so click on the picture for the bigger version. Okay I know you don’t like gif images so here is what it says:
The new Voter Identifaction requirements (explained below) do not apply to early voting.
Why the hell not? Don’t get me wrong, I’m jazzed. This will help us get young people to vote. But come on this thing is so choppy and so poorly written it is insane.
OK—discuss.
